Mural with First Lady, Michelle Obama

Melissa’s program, ArtReach, was selected for the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities First Lady’s annual service project in 2011. Melissa led five Corcoran College of Art and Design students and thirty five Joint Based Anacostia Education Center students to design and create a mural on the air force base with the First Lady and Congressional Wives.

The colorful mural is on permanent display at Joint Base Anacostia Bolling - Air Force Base – Youth and Family Education Center which provides care for more than 300 children of military families.

The First Lady Bug

We were honored to work with the First Lady of the United States on a collaborative mural for the Air Force base. First Lady, Michelle Obama, laughed when we asked her to paint in the “First Ladybug” on the design. She meticulously painted in the drawing with great care.

We were also honored to present an ArtReach student colored pencil landscape to President Obama. He commented that the student’s artwork looked, “Caribbean inspired”. We liked that it matched his tie.
